AI Startup Anthropic Challenges Pentagon Blacklist in Landmark Lawsuit
Anthropic, an artificial intelligence lab, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government, alleging that its placement on a national security blacklist violates their First and Fifth Amendment rights. The lawsuit accuses the Pentagon of retaliatory actions and procedural violations under the Administrative Procedure Act.
Anthropic, an artificial intelligence lab, intensified a legal clash with the U.S. military on Monday by suing the Pentagon to prevent being added to a national security blacklist.
The lawsuit, which targets notable figures such as President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, argues that inclusion on the blacklist is a retaliation against Anthropic's First Amendment rights. The AI startup contends that the government's actions infringe on its rights to free expression, particularly regarding discussions about AI safety.
Additionally, Anthropic accuses the government of bypassing required legal procedures, asserting violations of the Fifth Amendment's due process clause and the Administrative Procedure Act. The case is further complicated by charges of presidential overreach regarding contract terminations and blacklisting directives.
