In a major step toward modernising immigration and boosting the events economy, South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has launched a new digital visa platform designed to fast-track applications for international event participants.

The initiative, known as the Meetings, Exhibitions, Events and Tourism Scheme (MEETS), is being positioned as a game-changing reform aimed at removing bureaucratic delays and strengthening South Africa’s competitiveness as a global destination for large-scale events.

Visa Reform to Unlock Global Events Market

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber described MEETS as a “catalytic visa reform” that transforms the country’s ability to host high-profile international gatherings.

“By cutting red tape and accelerating secure visa processing through technological reform, MEETS ensures that when the world chooses South Africa as a host, our visa system is ready,” Schreiber said.

The platform introduces, for the first time, a dedicated and secure channel to process high-volume, time-sensitive group visa applications, a longstanding challenge for event organisers.

Designed for Speed, Scale and Security

MEETS is tailored to meet the logistical demands of major global events, where entire teams—ranging from performers and athletes to technical crews and delegates—must travel together within tight timelines.

Key features include:

  • Streamlined online group visa submissions

  • Centralised processing for large delegations

  • Faster turnaround times for time-sensitive applications

  • Secure digital systems to ensure compliance and integrity

“Global events move quickly, and host nations must be ready to respond with equal speed,” Schreiber said.

Supporting a High-Impact Events Economy

South Africa regularly hosts major international events such as:

  • Mining Indaba

  • Global sporting tournaments and World Cups

  • Large-scale music concerts and cultural festivals

  • International academic and business conferences

These events generate significant economic value, driving:

  • Tourism and hospitality revenue

  • Job creation across multiple sectors

  • Increased foreign investment and global visibility

Officials say MEETS will help unlock even greater economic benefits by ensuring visa processes no longer act as a bottleneck.

Digital Transformation of Home Affairs

The launch of MEETS forms part of a broader digital transformation strategy within the Department of Home Affairs, aimed at repositioning the department as an economic enabler rather than an administrative hurdle.

“By modernising our visa system, we are supporting tourism, investment, and job creation,” Schreiber said.

The reform aligns with government efforts to:

  • Improve ease of doing business

  • Attract international visitors and investors

  • Enhance service delivery through technology

Opportunities for Event Organisers

Domestic event organisers with a proven track record are invited to apply to join the MEETS programme.

Successful applicants will:

  • Enter into a formal Memorandum of Agreement with Home Affairs

  • Gain access to the streamlined visa processing system

  • Be subject to governance and compliance requirements

Applications can be submitted through the Department of Home Affairs website.

A Strategic Shift in Global Competitiveness

Industry experts say visa efficiency is a critical factor in determining where major global events are hosted. Delays or uncertainty can cost countries lucrative opportunities.

By addressing this gap, MEETS positions South Africa to:

  • Compete more effectively with global event destinations

  • Attract larger and more frequent international gatherings

  • Strengthen its reputation as a reliable host nation

Turning Immigration into Economic Infrastructure

The introduction of MEETS signals a broader shift in how South Africa views immigration—not just as a regulatory function, but as a strategic economic tool.

With faster, smarter and more reliable visa processing, the country is aiming to convert global interest into real economic impact—ensuring that when international events choose South Africa, the system is ready to deliver.
