A joint law enforcement operation at the Oshoek port of entry has resulted in the seizure of illicit drugs and contraband worth millions, highlighting intensified efforts to clamp down on cross-border crime.

Officials from the Border Management Authority (BMA), South African Revenue Service (SARS), and South African Police Service (SAPS) intercepted a truck entering South Africa from Eswatini on Monday evening, uncovering a large consignment of illegal goods.

Major Seizure: Drugs and Illicit Goods Uncovered

During a detailed inspection of the vehicle at approximately 20:00, authorities discovered:

  • 50 bags of dagga, weighing approximately 671.5 kilograms

  • Estimated street value of R2.8 million

  • 916 illicit tyres concealed within the same load

The discovery points to a coordinated smuggling attempt involving both narcotics and prohibited goods.

Suspect Flees, Manhunt Underway

In a dramatic turn during the operation, the truck driver fled the scene and remains at large.

Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to locate and apprehend the suspect, as investigations continue into the broader criminal network behind the shipment.

Multi-Agency Operation Strengthens Border Security

BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato praised the coordinated effort, emphasising the importance of inter-agency collaboration in tackling organised crime.

“All confiscated items have been registered with SAPS for evidentiary purposes, while SARS has seized the truck as part of ongoing investigations,” the BMA confirmed.

A criminal case has been opened, and further inquiries are underway.

Rising Focus on Cross-Border Crime

The Oshoek bust underscores growing concerns around drug trafficking and illicit trade along South Africa’s borders, particularly through high-traffic entry points.

Authorities say joint operations like this are critical to:

  • Disrupting organised smuggling networks

  • Preventing illegal goods from entering domestic markets

  • Protecting economic and public safety interests

Commitment to Intensified Enforcement

Dr Masiapato reiterated the Port Management Committee’s commitment to tightening border controls and increasing surveillance.

“The success of this operation demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated enforcement. We will continue to intensify efforts to ensure those involved in criminal activities are brought to justice,” he said.

With investigations ongoing, officials warn that more arrests could follow as authorities work to dismantle the network behind the intercepted consignment.
