$10M Hood Aerodrome Upgrade Boosts Safety, Regional Growth

Masterton’s Hood Aerodrome has undergone a major transformation following a $10 million Government investment, strengthening aviation capability, improving safety, and unlocking new economic opportunities for the Wairarapa region.

Major Upgrade Enhances Aviation Capability

The comprehensive upgrade has modernised critical airfield infrastructure, enabling the aerodrome to meet Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) certification standards—a key step that now allows larger aircraft to operate from the site.

“The aerodrome is now safer and better positioned to support the region’s aviation sector, economic development, and community needs for years to come,” Patterson said.

Key improvements delivered under the project include:

• Runway resurfacing and widening to improve safety and capacity

• Installation of enhanced airfield lighting systems

• Upgraded water and electrical networks supporting 27 new hangar sites

• Construction of new access roads to improve connectivity and operations

These upgrades secure the aerodrome’s long-term operational viability while expanding its role in regional aviation.

Supporting Critical Services and Local Industry

The enhanced infrastructure ensures continued and improved support for a wide range of essential and commercial aviation activities, including:

• Medical life-flight and emergency response services

• Search and rescue operations

• Agricultural aviation, including topdressing

• Pilot training and recreational flying

• Aviation events and tourism activities

Officials say the improved capacity and safety standards will also attract new aviation-related businesses and investment to the region.

$17 Million Project Backed by Central and Local Government

The aerodrome upgrade represents a $17.07 million total investment, combining:

• $10 million from central Government (approved in 2020)

• $7.07 million from Masterton District Council

This co-funding model highlights a collaborative approach to regional infrastructure development, aligning national investment with local priorities.

Additional Funding Strengthens Flood Resilience

Alongside the main upgrade, further work has been completed to protect the aerodrome from environmental risks.

A separate $954,000 investment from the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) has delivered:

• Erosion control measures along the aerodrome boundary

• Enhanced flood protection systems

This project forms part of a broader programme of 16 flood resilience initiatives across the Wairarapa, aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure from climate-related risks.

The upgraded aerodrome is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting the Wairarapa’s economy by:

• Supporting tourism growth through improved air access

• Enabling business expansion in aviation and related sectors

• Strengthening regional connectivity
