Seventeen bodies were discovered on a migrant boat off the coast of Comoros, the Indian Ocean archipelago's interior minister reported Thursday.
The migrants, believed to be headed for Mayotte—a French territory—saw their vessel found late Wednesday following calls for help from Mitsamiouli residents, according to a local hospital director.
The Comoros Interior Minister, Mohamed Ahamada, revealed at a press conference that a total of 17 bodies had been recovered, with 30 people surviving. Most migrants were identified as Congolese.
In 2024, at least 25 people died en route to Mayotte, highlighting the dangers associated with the search for a better life. Thousands have perished along this passage in recent years, underscored U.N. migration agency IOM's data.
