The Government of India’s flagship outreach initiative, Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA), is playing a pivotal role in fostering scientific temper among school students and encouraging them to pursue careers in space science, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh informed the Lok Sabha.

Responding to a question during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament, the Minister highlighted that the programme is part of a broader national vision to build a scientifically empowered India by nurturing talent at an early stage.

Early Exposure to Space Science

Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that YUVIKA has been specifically designed to ignite curiosity and interest in space science among school students, particularly at a formative stage of education.

  • The programme targets Class 9 students across the country

  • It provides foundational exposure to space science, technology, and applications

  • Aims to inspire students to consider careers in India’s growing space sector

“This early engagement is critical for building future scientists and innovators who will drive India’s space ambitions,” the Minister noted.

Transparent and Merit-Based Selection

The Minister outlined a multi-stage selection process to ensure fairness and merit:

  1. Online screening of academic performance

  2. Online quiz competition to assess aptitude

  3. Final selection after verification of credentials

This structured approach ensures that talented students from diverse backgrounds are identified and given the opportunity to participate.

Growing Reach and Impact

Highlighting the programme’s success, Dr. Jitendra Singh informed that:

  • 1,320 students have benefited from YUVIKA so far

  • There is rising enthusiasm among youth for space-related disciplines

The increasing participation reflects the programme’s effectiveness in bridging classroom learning with real-world scientific exposure.

A key feature of YUVIKA is its emphasis on equitable access and inclusiveness:

  • 15% reservation for students from rural and remote areas

  • Ensures representation from underserved regions

The Minister stressed that such provisions are essential to tap hidden talent across the country and democratize access to high-quality scientific learning.
