In a worrying trend, over 20 Indian workers have been reported dead on foreign soil each day over the past five years, chiefly in Gulf countries, according to recent government data. These statistics, presented by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, highlight the dire working conditions faced by Indian expatriates.
Between 2021 and 2025, a total of 37,740 Indian worker casualties were recorded, with the majority occurring in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, numerous complaints pertaining to abuse and labor exploitation have been received, primarily from the Gulf region, Malaysia, and the Maldives.
In response, the Indian government emphasizes the safety of its citizens overseas and has initiated diplomatic efforts, including signing Memorandums of Understanding with host nations, to ensure legal protections and improve the work conditions for Indian laborers abroad.
