The Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined to place a hold on the trial involving two individuals charged with the alleged attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at a public event in 2025. Justice Anup J Bhambhani directed the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), based in Rohini, to hasten the forensic examination of the accused's cell phones and demanded a report within four weeks.
Justice Bhambhani stated, "I do not believe in staying something unless I am very clear that something wrong is going on or will go on. I do not see that at all," expressing doubt about why the accused were in Delhi. The court was addressing petitions from Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai and Tahsin Raza Rafiullah Shaikh, who are contesting the charges, including attempted murder, filed against them.
The charges stem from an incident on August 20, 2025, during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme in the Civil Lines area, which Gupta's office described as a "well-planned conspiracy to kill her." The Delhi Police lawyer requested an expedited forensic examination of cell phones to establish a connection between the accused. The trial court had formally charged the duo on December 26, 2025, under various sections, making a prima facie case for proceeding.
