Record-Breaking Seizures in West Bengal's Election Crackdown

In West Bengal, seizures of illicit items by the Election Commission have exceeded Rs 510 crore, surpassing previous legislature election figures. The confiscated goods include cash, liquor, drugs, and precious metals, intended to influence voters. Officials anticipate further recoveries ahead of the ongoing election process.

The Election Commission has reported a significant surge in the seizures of illicit items in West Bengal, with totals surpassing Rs 510 crore. This development marks a new high compared to the Rs 339 crore recorded during the 2021 assembly elections.

Enforcement agencies have confiscated Rs 30 crore in cash, over 48,000 litres of liquor valued at Rs 126.85 crore, drugs worth Rs 110.12 crore, and precious metals worth Rs 58.28 crore, which include gold and silver intended to sway voters.

Additionally, freebies worth Rs 184.85 crore, encompassing household items, apparel, and cellphones, were seized. These confiscations occur amidst the multi-phase election process that commenced on April 23, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
