Goa police on Tuesday questioned Aam Aadmi Party MLA Venzy Viegas in a case related to a protest held outside Town and Country Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane's home in February over a contentious land conversion provision. Speaking to reporters after his appearance at the Panaji police station, Viegas alleged that the police were targeting and harassing legislators from the minority community by summoning them for questioning in the case. Several hundred agitators had protested outside Rane's residence in Dona Paula near Panaji on February 24, when Revolutionary Goans Party MLA Viresh Borkar began a fast-unto-death demanding the scrapping of Section 39-A of the Town and Country Planning Act. The section enables the conversion of a non-settlement zone into a settlement zone, paving the way for construction activities. Police had registered an FIR against the Goa Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao, three other MLAs, and around 1,500 protesters for unlawful assembly in connection with the protest march. Alemao, a Congress MLA, recorded his statement with the police on Monday.
