A Cuban immigrant has died in U.S. immigration custody, with authorities suspecting suicide, according to a recent announcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The individual, 33-year-old Denny Adan Gonzalez, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at Georgia's Stewart Detention Center and pronounced dead within the hour.

President Donald Trump's administration has significantly increased immigrant detainment, pushing to expand numbers from 40,000 in 2025 to 60,000. The number of deaths at such facilities, like Stewart Detention Center, where Gonzalez was held, is alarmingly high, hitting a two-decade peak last year, with 18 deaths recorded early this year.

Gonzalez, previously deported and re-entered illegally, was later arrested in North Carolina and transferred to Stewart, run by CoreCivic. Advocates criticize its location and conditions. Despite efforts to improve medical response, critics argue more must be done as ICE plans further expansion due to a 2025 spending law.
