Crackdown on Press: Investigative Journalist's Harrowing Detention in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso's military junta faces new accusations of human rights abuses, with reports surfacing that prominent journalist Atiana Serge Oulon has been secretly detained. This revelation comes from Reporters Without Borders, an advocacy group highlighting the regime's oppressive response to political dissent.

Oulon, the editor of L'Evenement newspaper, was reportedly abducted in 2024 by armed personnel in civilian dress. The government claimed he was drafted for military service; however, former detainees described a different story. They recounted being held in dire conditions alongside Oulon, at a heavily-guarded facility in Ouagadougou, as late as 2025.

These reports emerge amidst a broader crackdown on media and dissent under junta leader Capt. Ibrahim Traoré. As international advocacy groups call for Oulon's release, concerns mount over increasing media suppression and human rights violations in Burkina Faso.
