Tensions Rise as Israeli Nationalists March Through Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter

Thousands of Israeli nationalists marched through the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem's walled Old City on Thursday, in a heavily policed event commemorating Israel's capture of East Jerusalem nearly six decades ago.

Seen as a provocation by Palestinian residents, the annual Jerusalem Day parade prompted many to seek safety inside their homes as demonstrators chanted incendiary slogans. Some Palestinians, viewing the march as a move to undermine their claim to the city, were restricted from entering the area.

The controversial event heightened tensions, drawing a significant police presence and closures in the Old City. Israeli authorities, citing security concerns, erected barricades and restricted access around Damascus Gate, emphasizing the sensitive nature of this yearly demonstration.
