U.S. Sanctions Deepen Pressure on Cuban Officials
The U.S. government imposed sanctions on nine Cuban officials, including top military leaders and the communications minister. This move aims to exert pressure on Cuba's communist government, seen as corrupt and incompetent by the Trump administration. The effort is part of broader sanctions targeting Cuba’s key economic sectors.
The Trump administration has intensified its campaign against Cuba by imposing sanctions on nine of its high-level officials, including the communications minister and senior military personnel. The U.S. Treasury Department indicated these measures as part of a wider initiative to destabilize Cuba's communist government.
The administration has labeled Cuba's government as corrupt and cited its ambitions for a regime change. By restricting oil flows from Venezuela and Mexico to the island, the administration has ramped up economic pressure, causing significant power outages and economic strain.
Among those sanctioned are Mayra Arevich Marin, the communications minister, and Juan Esteban Lazo Hernandez, president of the Cuban National Assembly. The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control also targeted Cuba's main intelligence service. Further actions include prospective criminal charges against former President Raul Castro.
