The Indian Navy successfully concluded the landmark IOS SAGAR deployment with the ceremonial flag-in of INS Sunayna at Kochi on 20 May 2026, marking the completion of one of the most comprehensive multinational maritime engagements conducted in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The deployment brought together 38 personnel from 16 partner nations and showcased India's growing role as the Preferred Security Partner in the region while reinforcing its commitment to maritime cooperation, interoperability and collective security across the Indo-Pacific.

The IOS SAGAR mission was jointly undertaken by the Indian Navy along with maritime personnel from:

INS Sunayna received a ceremonial welcome upon its return to Kochi harbour.

The ship was accorded:

  • Escort by Naval Fast Interceptor Craft

  • Formal reception by senior naval officers

The flag-in ceremony was attended by:

Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena

Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOCINC), Southern Naval Command

who served as the Chief Guest for the occasion.

During the ceremony, Vice Admiral Saxena commended the multinational crew for:

  • Teamwork throughout the prolonged deployment

Focus on Combating Non-Traditional Maritime Threats

The deployment placed major emphasis on improving collective preparedness against non-traditional maritime threats.

These include:

  • Piracy

  • Illegal fishing

  • Arms trafficking

  • Narcotics smuggling

  • Unlawful maritime activities

The Indian Navy stated that regional collaboration is increasingly important as maritime security challenges continue to evolve in complexity across the Indian Ocean.

During the deployment, INS Sunayna undertook port calls at:

  • Jakarta

  • Subject Matter Expert Exchanges

Comprehensive Pre-Deployment Training Conducted

Prior to deployment, the multinational crew underwent intensive harbour training at Southern Naval Command in Kochi.

Training covered several operational areas, including:

  • Seamanship

  • Navigation

  • Firefighting

  • Damage control

  • Communication procedures

  • Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations

  • Advanced bridgemanship

The crew also participated in the:

IONS Maritime Exercise IMEX 2026 Table Top Exercise

held in Kochi before deployment.

The exercises helped improve operational preparedness and professional interoperability among participating navies.
