India's Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has achieved a landmark milestone with more than 100 crore health records successfully linked to Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA), marking a major advancement in the country's journey toward building an integrated, interoperable and citizen-centric digital healthcare ecosystem.
Implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the milestone reflects the rapid expansion and growing adoption of digital health services across government programmes, state health platforms, hospitals, healthcare providers and private health technology ecosystems.
The achievement positions India among the world's leading digital health ecosystems and represents a major step toward paperless, secure and patient-centric healthcare delivery.
ABDM Emerging as Backbone of India's Digital Health Infrastructure
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission was launched to create a robust digital public infrastructure for healthcare in India by enabling secure, consent-based and interoperable exchange of health information across the healthcare ecosystem.
At the centre of the initiative is the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), which acts as a unique digital health identity for citizens.
ABHA allows individuals to securely create, store, access and share their medical records digitally across healthcare institutions including:
-
Hospitals
-
Clinics
-
Laboratories
-
Pharmacies
-
Diagnostic centres
-
Government health programmes
Officials say the system is helping reduce paperwork, improve continuity of care and make healthcare services more efficient and accessible.
100 Crore Health Records Linked in Rapid Expansion
The latest achievement highlights the remarkable pace of digital health adoption in India.
According to the National Health Authority, ABDM doubled the number of linked health records from 50 crore in February 2025 to over 100 crore within just 15 months.
Nearly 10 crore health records are now being linked every two to three months, demonstrating accelerating participation across the healthcare ecosystem.
Officials noted that the mission started with fewer than 1,000 linked records during its early phase and has now evolved into one of the largest digital health infrastructures globally.
Experts believe the scale and speed of expansion underline India's growing capabilities in building large-scale digital public infrastructure.
Secure and Consent-Based Health Information Exchange
One of the key features of ABDM is its consent-based health information exchange mechanism.
Under the system, citizens retain control over their medical information and can choose when and with whom to share their records digitally.
This enables healthcare providers to access relevant patient history quickly and securely while maintaining privacy protections.
Authorities say the framework strengthens:
-
Data privacy
-
Patient consent management
-
Interoperability between healthcare systems
-
Continuity of treatment
-
Digital healthcare accessibility
The digital system is designed to reduce duplication of tests, improve treatment coordination and make healthcare delivery more efficient.
States and Union Territories Driving Digital Health Growth
The rapid growth of ABHA-linked records has been significantly supported by active participation from States and Union Territories.
Among the leading contributors:
Uttar Pradesh
-
Over 15.03 crore linked health records
Andhra Pradesh
-
More than 11.95 crore linked records
Bihar
-
Over 7.37 crore linked records
Rajasthan
-
More than 6.32 crore linked records
Gujarat
-
Approximately 4.77 crore linked records
Several other states and union territories have also contributed substantially to the nationwide expansion of ABDM.
Officials say strong collaboration between the central government and state administrations has been critical for scaling digital health adoption.
Major Government Health Platforms Integrated with ABDM
A wide range of government health programmes and digital platforms have contributed to the 100 crore milestone by integrating with the ABDM ecosystem.
These include:
-
Non-Communicable Disease Programme
-
CoWIN platform
-
Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)
-
Uttar Pradesh's eKavach platform
-
Andhra Pradesh health platforms
-
Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Programme
-
eHospital by National Informatics Centre (NIC)
-
eSushrut by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)
-
Gujarat's TeCHO platform
-
Rajasthan's iHMS platform
The integration of these systems allows health records to be generated and linked seamlessly across multiple healthcare programmes and facilities.
Private Health Technology Sector Also Contributing
In addition to government systems, private healthcare technology providers have played an increasingly important role in strengthening India's digital health ecosystem.
More than 450 public and private health technology solutions have now integrated successfully with the ABDM platform.
This includes digital health startups, hospital management systems, telemedicine platforms and health information service providers.
Officials say collaboration with private technology partners is helping accelerate innovation, expand digital healthcare access and improve interoperability within the healthcare sector.
NHA CEO Highlights Citizen-Centric Digital Healthcare Vision
On the achievement of the milestone, National Health Authority CEO Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal said the growth reflects increasing adoption of digital healthcare services across the country.
"The linking of over 100 crore health records with ABHA is an important milestone in the journey of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It reflects the increasing adoption of digital health services across Government programmes, States, health facilities and private technology partners," he said.
Dr. Barnwal emphasized that ABHA-linked health records empower citizens by giving them secure and consent-based access to their medical information.
"ABDM is designed to place citizens at the centre of the digital health ecosystem. With consent-based sharing of health records, individuals can access their medical information whenever required and share relevant records with healthcare providers digitally," he added.
Building India's Digital Public Infrastructure for Healthcare
ABDM forms part of India's broader strategy to develop digital public infrastructure across critical sectors such as healthcare, finance, governance and education.
The mission includes several foundational digital components:
Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA)
A unique digital health identity for citizens.
Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR)
A digital registry of verified healthcare professionals.
Health Facility Registry (HFR)
A nationwide digital database of health facilities.
Health Information Exchange & Consent Manager (HIE-CM)
A consent-based system for secure exchange of health information.
Unified Health Interface (UHI)
An open digital network for healthcare services.
National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX)
A digital system for streamlined health insurance claims processing.
Together, these digital building blocks aim to create an interoperable healthcare ecosystem that improves efficiency, transparency and patient outcomes.
Towards Longitudinal Digital Health Records
The long-term goal of ABDM is to enable longitudinal digital health records for every citizen.
This means individuals can maintain a lifelong digital medical history accessible across healthcare providers, improving treatment continuity and clinical decision-making.
Experts believe such systems can significantly improve:
-
Healthcare coordination
-
Chronic disease management
-
Emergency treatment response
-
Public health planning
-
Health insurance processing
-
Medical research and analytics
India Expanding Leadership in Digital Governance
The success of ABDM further strengthens India's position as a global leader in large-scale digital public infrastructure.
Following the success of platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI and CoWIN, the digital health mission is increasingly being viewed as another major example of India's ability to implement population-scale digital systems.
Healthcare experts say the rapid expansion of digital health records could transform healthcare accessibility, efficiency and patient empowerment across the country.
With over 100 crore health records now linked to ABHA, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has marked another major milestone toward creating a connected, paperless and patient-centric healthcare system for India's future.
