KZN Premier Ntuli Calls for Unity and Moral Renewal at Provincial Prayer Gathering

“Churches and religious leaders continue to play a vital role in counselling families, guiding the youth, supporting vulnerable communities and promoting values that strengthen society,” the Premier said.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has reaffirmed the importance of collective prayer, social unity, and moral regeneration as essential pillars for building peaceful and resilient communities across the province. Speaking at the Annual KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Prayer held at the Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Sports Ground in Ulundi, the Premier said faith and community solidarity remain critical in addressing the province's ongoing social challenges.

The large-scale prayer gathering drew thousands of congregants, faith leaders, community representatives, and residents from across KwaZulu-Natal who came together in a spirit of reflection, hope, and unity. The event focused on promoting peace, compassion, responsible citizenship, and social cohesion at a time when the province continues to confront complex socio-economic and public safety issues.

Addressing the gathering, Premier Ntuli highlighted the important contribution of churches and faith-based organisations in supporting communities, counselling families, guiding young people, and strengthening moral values within society.

The Premier stressed that faith institutions remain indispensable partners in government's broader efforts to combat crime, gender-based violence (GBV), substance abuse, poverty, and social instability. According to him, restoring dignity, compassion, respect, and Ubuntu within communities is essential for building a safer and more united KwaZulu-Natal.

He further noted that moral regeneration and social cohesion form key pillars of the province's long-term development agenda. Ntuli called on residents, religious leaders, civil society groups, and government institutions to work collectively towards rebuilding trust, strengthening families, and creating communities grounded in peace and shared responsibility.

The Annual KZN Provincial Prayer also served as a platform to reinforce collaboration between government and faith-based organisations in promoting social healing and community empowerment. Officials said the event reflected the province's commitment to fostering unity and collective action in addressing both social and developmental challenges.

Observers noted that KwaZulu-Natal has in recent years faced significant pressures linked to rising crime levels, youth unemployment, social inequality, and incidents of violence, making social cohesion initiatives increasingly important in maintaining community stability and public confidence.

Alongside the prayer gathering, Premier Ntuli also unveiled a major water infrastructure initiative aimed at improving access to clean and reliable water for rural communities in the uKhahlamba Local Municipality under the uThukela District Municipality.

The Premier officially launched the Vimbukhalo Water Supply Project, which is expected to benefit more than 3,500 households in the region. The project marks a significant milestone in the provincial government's efforts to strengthen water infrastructure and improve access to basic services in underserved communities.

The infrastructure programme included the completion of two major reticulation developments — Vimbukhalo Reticulation 03 and Vimbukhalo Reticulation 04 — designed to improve potable water access for residents in Wards 2 and 14.

Communities in the area have long experienced challenges related to water shortages and unreliable supply systems. Provincial officials said the project is expected to provide much-needed relief while improving public health, sanitation, and overall quality of life.

In addition to improving access to clean water, the project also created employment opportunities for local residents during its construction phase, contributing to local economic activity and supporting livelihoods within the municipality.

Premier Ntuli said the Vimbukhalo Water Supply Project demonstrates government's commitment to addressing infrastructure backlogs and ensuring equitable access to essential services.

"Access to water is not only a basic service, but a foundation for health, development and economic participation. Reliable water supply enables communities to live with dignity, supports local development and strengthens the broader socio-economic growth of the district," Ntuli stated.

He added that the successful completion of the project represents an important step towards restoring dignity and creating new hope for communities that have historically struggled with inadequate service delivery.

The provincial government continues to prioritise infrastructure development, water security, and social investment programmes as part of broader efforts to improve living conditions and stimulate inclusive economic growth across KwaZulu-Natal.

Experts note that reliable water infrastructure remains critical for supporting public health, education, agriculture, local business development, and long-term rural economic sustainability, especially in communities vulnerable to climate variability and infrastructure shortages.

The dual focus on spiritual unity and infrastructure development during the Premier's engagements reflects KwaZulu-Natal's broader approach of combining social cohesion initiatives with practical service delivery interventions aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
