Signal Warfare: Russia's GPS Manipulation Across Europe
Russia is reportedly using its bases in Kaliningrad to broadcast false GPS signals across regions in Europe, posing security threats. The Lithuanian communications regulator points to expanded Russian GPS spoofing capabilities, affecting areas across the Baltic and beyond. Russia denies these allegations, dismissing them as Western propaganda.
Authorities in Lithuania have raised alarms over Russia's expanding capability to falsify GPS signals throughout Europe. The concerns center on activities originating from the Kaliningrad exclave, a strategic area between Lithuania and Poland.
Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has faced accusations of electronic interference from involved nations, an allegation Moscow refutes. Darius Kuliesius, deputy head of Lithuania's communications regulator, claims Russia increased its misleading GPS antennas from three to 36.
Incidents affecting air navigation in nations like Estonia and Finland have been linked to these operations. Furthermore, Lithuania faces domestic technical challenges as mobile networks suffer interference spikes linked to geopolitical tensions.
