NATO Boosts Defense with New Baltic Strategy
NATO plans to enhance its eastern defense by creating a new command structure for rapid force deployment in the Baltics, underscoring the region's strategic importance amid Russian threats. Germany and the Netherlands will build up a joint corps, reinforcing European defense autonomy in coordination with NATO.
NATO is set to strengthen its eastern defenses by establishing a new command structure that will facilitate rapid deployment of forces in Latvia and Estonia, according to two sources familiar with the developments told Reuters.
The current situation sees NATO forces in the three Baltic countries and northern Poland under one command headquartered in Szczecin, Poland. The new strategy plans to address this by allocating a second corps, allowing quicker mobilization in the strategically crucial Baltic region.
The German-Netherlands Corps, based in Münster, will be assigned to this task. This move comes amid increasing responsibility for European nations to ensure their own security, particularly after U.S. President Trump's critical stance and announced troop withdrawal. Coordination continues as both Germany and NATO declined to comment further.
