A betting ring taking wagers on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches was dismantled by city police on Wednesday. The police arrested eight individuals, among them an IT professional and a bank employee, suspected of running the operation.
Those taken into custody from a residence in Babji Nagar include Kunal Das, Rajendra Das, Ramaswami, Chinmay Kumar Sahu, Anand Pradhan, Avinash Thakur, Shashank Negi, and Vikash Biswal. While four of these accused belong to Odisha, the others hail from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, said Rajesh Kumar Tripathi, Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Investigations uncovered a sophisticated operation with educated individuals in key roles, including IT, banking, and other sectors. Items confiscated include 23 mobile phones, three laptops, a television, and betting logs amounting to over Rs 2 crore. The gang utilized a website to manage betting activities, providing customers with the necessary credentials to place their bets, with financial transactions processed online.
An investigation is ongoing to explore potential ties to Dubai, as initial findings suggest. Authorities are scrutinizing bank records and digital transactions linked to this illicit network.
