On May 22, the HMCS Charlottetown embarked on a routine transit through the Taiwan Strait, successfully completing it by May 23, as reported by the Canadian Department of National Defence. China's assertion of sovereignty over the democratically governed Taiwan and the critical Taiwan Strait continues to fuel diplomatic tension.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning affirmed China's respect for all nations' navigation rights under international law. Taiwan's defense ministry underscored the strait's status as an international waterway, emphasizing the unrestricted navigation rights enjoyed by all countries involved.
