Out-of-State Agitators Propel Tensions at Newark Immigration Protest
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill criticized out-of-state agitators for heightening tensions at protests outside a Newark immigrant detention center. State police were deployed to maintain order, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka imposed a curfew around Delaney Hall. The focus, Sherrill emphasized, should remain on advocating for better conditions for detainees.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill blamed out-of-state agitators for escalating tensions at protests outside a Newark immigration detention center. On Saturday, the state police took control of the situation as Newark imposed a curfew around Delaney Hall.
Sherrill confirmed that five of the six individuals arrested were from outside the state, and national extremist groups had joined the protests. She emphasized that those causing chaos were not aiding detainees or their families.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced a nightly curfew, starting at midnight, to limit access around the facility. Police had set up "protected protest zones" after confrontations arose over detainees' labor and hunger strikes. Sherrill called for peaceful protests, stressing the need to focus on improving conditions for detainees.
