Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan has called on aspiring journalists to uphold truth, objectivity and democratic values as they prepare to enter an increasingly complex and technology-driven media landscape. Addressing the closing ceremony of a month-long internship programme conducted by Sansad TV for final-year postgraduate students of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at the Vice-President's residence, Radhakrishnan emphasized the critical role media plays in shaping public discourse and strengthening democracy.
Media Must Serve Democracy with Responsibility
The Vice-President praised the internship initiative, recalling that he had suggested closer collaboration between IIMC and Sansad TV during his visit to the institute's convocation earlier this year. He appreciated the swift implementation of the proposal and acknowledged the contribution of Sansad TV professionals who mentored the students.
Highlighting the importance of journalism in a democratic society, Radhakrishnan said India needs media professionals who are intellectually honest, socially aware, technologically skilled and deeply committed to public service. He noted that media organizations possess the power not only to shape narratives but also to influence the direction of nations, making responsible journalism more important than ever.
Students Encouraged to Tell India's Growth Story
Calling on young communicators to contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the Vice-President urged them to present India's development journey with fairness, integrity and factual accuracy. He observed that India's growing global standing is attracting international attention due to its demographic strength, technological progress and resilient democratic institutions. According to him, journalists have an important role in documenting and communicating these developments to both domestic and international audiences.
At the same time, he cautioned against the growing tendency toward sensationalism in today's fast-paced media environment, stressing that credibility should be built on truth and public interest rather than popularity or attention.
Human Judgment Remains Essential in the AI Era
Radhakrishnan also addressed the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in journalism and communication. While acknowledging AI's potential to support research, information gathering and fact verification, he emphasized that editorial decisions must continue to rely on human judgment, ethics and reasoning. He warned aspiring journalists to remain vigilant against misinformation, manipulated content and deepfake technologies, which pose growing challenges to media credibility.
The Vice-President further advocated for inclusive journalism that goes beyond metropolitan centres and captures the realities, aspirations and achievements of people across the country. He said a true understanding of India requires coverage that reflects the diversity of experiences found in towns, villages and underserved regions.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Rajya Sabha Secretary-General P. C. Mody, Sansad TV CEO Amit Khare, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar, and IIMC Vice-Chancellor Dr. Pragya Paliwal Gaur.
