South Africa Seeks Stronger Fuel Industry Partnership for Growth

Creecy described the fuel industry as one of the most strategic sectors in the South African economy because it supports transportation, manufacturing, trade and logistics while creating jobs and attracting investment.

South Africa's Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has urged the fuels industry to strengthen its partnership with government as the country works to improve economic growth, energy security and logistics performance.

Speaking at the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa's Annual Imbizo in Sandton, Creecy said close cooperation between government, regulators, State-owned entities, investors and industry stakeholders is essential to address challenges facing the transport and logistics sector. She noted that the fuel industry depends on a stable and predictable operating environment and stressed the importance of building long-term partnerships that support investment and development.

According to the minister, neither government nor industry can overcome existing challenges alone. She said shared responsibility and a common vision are necessary to unlock the opportunities that lie ahead for the country.

Fuel Sector Plays Critical Role in South Africa's Economy

She said a reliable and resilient fuel supply chain remains vital for the smooth functioning of the economy and acknowledged the industry's contribution to keeping businesses and communities connected.

The minister reaffirmed government's commitment to creating conditions that support growth through effective policies, infrastructure planning, regulatory oversight and improved management of State-owned entities involved in transport and logistics. She added that investors need confidence, infrastructure users need transparency and the market requires certainty to support future expansion of the liquid fuels industry.

Durban Port Projects Expected to Support Future Demand

Highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen fuel logistics infrastructure, Creecy said the Department of Transport is working closely with Transnet and the Transnet National Ports Authority on several initiatives at the Island View precinct in the Port of Durban.

The projects are aimed at improving infrastructure planning, operational efficiency, safety standards and long-term investment opportunities in one of the country's key fuel handling hubs. She explained that these interventions are designed not only to meet current demand but also to prepare South Africa for future growth in fuel imports, storage facilities and related logistics services.

Closing her address, Creecy assured industry leaders that government remains committed to building a transport and logistics system that is efficient, competitive and sustainable. She said stronger cooperation between the public and private sectors can help ensure that South Africa's strategic infrastructure continues to support economic growth, attract investment and strengthen energy security for years to come.
