Voting in the Raipur City South assembly constituency byelection in Chhattisgarh began on Wednesday, under stringent security measures.
The seat became vacant following BJP legislator Brijmohan Agrawal's election to the Lok Sabha from Raipur, prompting the contest. Polling is scheduled from 7 am to 6 pm.
A total of 2,71,169 electors, including a mix of men, women, and transgenders, are set to cast their votes, with the battle largely pitched between BJP’s Sunil Kumar Soni and Congress’ Akash Sharma.
A total of 253 polling stations have been established for the election, backed by the deployment of over 1,000 security personnel, to ensure smooth proceedings. The counting of votes is scheduled for November 23.
The BJP won a significant victory in the state assembly elections last year, with 54 out of 90 seats, while the Congress secured 35, and one seat went to the Gondwana Gantantra Party.
