Judicial Independence Under Threat: Chief Justice Roberts Warns of Rising Tensions
U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts highlights rising threats to judicial independence, citing increased violence and threats against judges, disinformation spread by foreign actors, and political disregard for court rulings. He emphasizes the importance of informed public criticism while warning against intimidation of judges through baseless allegations.
U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stark warning on Tuesday about escalating threats to the judiciary's independence. In an annual report, Roberts highlighted a worrying rise in violent threats and online intimidation against judges, amplified by disinformation campaigns from foreign state actors.
He noted a significant surge in threats, with the U.S. Marshals Service investigating over 1,000 serious threats against federal judges in the past five years. Roberts warned about dangerous suggestions by elected officials to disregard court rulings, emphasizing that such challenges threaten the foundation of the rule of law.
Despite not addressing specific recent cases, Roberts underscored the essential role of public engagement in judicial matters but cautioned against attempts to intimidate judges. He called for rejecting baseless allegations of political bias and urged public officials to remain measured in their critiques to prevent inciting harmful reactions.
