A large group of booth-level officers (BLOs) protested at the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal on Monday. Demonstrators objected to the heavy workload involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, leading authorities to bolster police presence at the scene.
The protest intensified as a delegation led by BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari arrived for a scheduled meeting with election officials. Despite the rising tensions and attempts by protesters to breach security barricades, Adhikari proceeded with the meeting alongside several BJP MLAs.
Protesters, upset with the working conditions and deadlines for BLOs, chanted slogans against the opposition leader. Adhikari met with officials to submit demands, including stricter monitoring of electoral processes and changes to staffing policies, while attributing the protests to adversarial political scripting.
