Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado faces uncertainty as the scheduled Oslo press conference was abruptly canceled. The Venezuelan opposition leader remains elusive due to a travel ban imposed by President Nicolas Maduro, complicating her journey to the award ceremony.
Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, expressed uncertainty about Machado's arrival but affirmed the ceremony's importance in highlighting Venezuela's struggle for democracy. Dignitaries, including King Harald and several Latin American heads of state, plan to attend.
Machado, an industrial engineer, was awarded for challenging what is termed a dictatorship in Venezuela. Her alignment with Trumpian policies has raised international eyebrows, but her dedication to democracy remains intact amid political turmoil and arrest warrants.
