Mass Rally in Nepal: Oli Seeks Resurgence Amid Political Turmoil
Tens of thousands gathered in Nepal's Bhaktapur for a rally supporting ousted PM K.P. Sharma Oli. The event marks the biggest political mobilization since protests deposed Oli. The rally aimed to bolster support for Oli's re-election as UML president amid ongoing constitutional and economic upheaval.
In a striking display of political resurgence, tens of thousands rallied in Nepal's Bhaktapur to support ousted Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. This marks the largest political gathering since youth-led protests resulted in his removal from office three months ago.
With an estimated 70,000 attendees, the rally was part of a three-day convention for the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), although organizers had aimed for a crowd of 300,000. The event highlights the party's strong support base in the wake of significant civil unrest, which caused extensive economic damage amounting to over $586 million.
As Oli seeks re-election as UML president, he contends with accusations of being anti-youth, a claim he refutes. The gathering underscores the party's resilience and sets the stage for upcoming parliamentary elections, with Oli facing competition from his deputy, Ishwar Pokharel.
