Mumbai is gearing up for high-stakes elections to determine the leadership of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the nation's wealthiest civic body. Over one crore voters are registered to participate in the polls next month.
The Maharashtra State Election Commission officially announced the election date as January 15, with the counting of votes to take place the following day. This election will witness a contested battle between the ruling Mahayuti and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for dominance in Maharashtra's municipal corporations.
The recently published final electoral rolls indicate that in Mumbai alone, there are 1,03,44,315 eligible voters. This marks an increase from the 2017 data. The upcoming election is significant, as it will be the first since the last BMC corporators' term ended in March 2022, leaving the municipal commissioner in charge.
