In a significant development, French prosecutors have proposed a five-year prohibition on far-right leader Marine Le Pen contesting public office, linked to her appeal trial over the alleged misuse of European Union funds. The ban, however, is recommended not to be enforced immediately, which maintains the uncertainty surrounding her potential 2027 presidential election bid. This decision rests with the appeals court, which is expected to make a ruling in the upcoming months.

The initial ruling, delivered in March last year, was a major blow to Le Pen, as it immediately prohibited her from holding office for five years. According to the court, Le Pen played a central role in a scheme that misappropriated over 4 million euros of EU funds to finance staff within her far-right party.

While prosecutors insisted on Le Pen's guilt, recommending a four-year sentence with partial suspension to be served at home, they refrained from calling for immediate enforcement of any decision, acknowledging the ongoing appeals process. If allowed to appeal to the Cour de Cassation, Le Pen might still contest the presidential elections, introducing potential political stakes for her and her party.
