In Kerala, every election brings agrarian issues into sharp focus, and this season is no exception. Farmers have highlighted ongoing concerns such as human-wildlife conflicts, particularly in high-altitude areas and procurement challenges in regions like Palakkad and Kuttanad. Persistent wild animal raids have significantly impacted farming operations, affecting livelihoods.
Mathew George, a farmer near Sultan Bathery, expressed his distress over substantial crop losses due to wildlife, asserting that current laws prevent effective countermeasures. The Kerala Independent Farmers Association (KIFA) has presented a 15-point charter of demands to political parties, asking for real solutions beyond electoral promises.
KIFA's demands include policy changes to protect farmers responding to wildlife threats, and enhanced compensation for those affected by attacks. The organization seeks firm political commitments to resolve these issues, impacting farmers' decisions to support specific political fronts in the upcoming elections.
