Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav on Friday said the party would extend all possible support to nearly 310 families living in the Yamuna Bazar Ghat area who were allegedly issued eviction notices by civic authorities without any rehabilitation arrangement. Yadav, accompanied by several senior Congress leaders, visited the settlement near Yamuna Bazar and interacted with residents who claimed they had been asked to vacate their homes within 15 days. According to the Congress leader, many of the families have been residing in the area since before Independence and depend on river-related work for their livelihood. ''The Delhi Congress will do everything possible to save the people living on the Yamuna Bazar ghats from eviction without proper rehabilitation,'' Yadav said. He alleged that the Delhi government was using National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders as a pretext to remove poor residents from the city. Yadav also accused the government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of focusing on demolition drives against slum dwellers over the past year. ''If these residents are evicted, they will not only become homeless but also lose their means of livelihood. Their children's education will also suffer,'' he said. The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP government had failed to clean the Yamuna River and was attempting to shift attention from governance issues through eviction drives. Residents told Congress leaders that relocation away from the Yamuna area would severely impact their earnings as many families are engaged in work linked to the river ghats, he said.
