Bolivia in Turmoil: Protesters vs. Power
Protests continue in Bolivia as police clash with miners near the government palace in La Paz. Demonstrators demand labor reforms and President Rodrigo Paz's resignation amidst ongoing unrest and strikes. Earlier, teachers joined protests for higher wages. Despite repealing a controversial land law, discontent grows.
In a turbulent week for Bolivia, clashes broke out in La Paz on Friday, where police deployed tear gas to disrupt a mob of miners advancing on the government palace. The miners, employing small dynamite charges, symbolize the nationwide unrest gripping the country.
President Rodrigo Paz, who assumed office late last year following nearly two decades of single-party rule, is facing mounting protests from thousands of miners demanding labor reforms and fuel supplies. The demonstrators escalated their protest by calling for Paz's resignation.
While rural educators also took to the streets seeking higher wages, Paz's recent repeal of a contentious land mortgaging law did little to quell the unrest. Instead, the protests have only intensified, leading to blockades that have effectively halted activity in Bolivia's capital.
