In a significant legal development, a court in Uttar Pradesh handed a two-year prison sentence to Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. This verdict stems from remarks made by Khan during the 2019 Lok Sabha poll campaign, which were deemed objectionable towards government officials.
The controversial remarks, which reportedly violated the Model Code of Conduct, were delivered during an election rally in the Mankara area. The speech was later shared on social media, prompting legal action following a complaint by Ghanshyam Tripathi, the then sub-divisional magistrate.
With charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act, Khan's case contributes to an ongoing history of legal scrutiny and action against him. Khan's lawyer indicated intentions to appeal the decision.
