Nagaland Chief Minister and Naga People's Front (NPF) President Neiphiu Rio on Monday hailed the Election Commission of India's formal approval of the NDPP-NPF merger, calling it a ''historic moment'' and a ''golden period'' for the party.
He urged party workers to rededicate themselves to serving the Naga people.
Addressing the party ticket distribution ceremony for the Town Council by-elections 2026, Rio said the merger, approved by the Election Commission of India through its order earlier this month, has formally recognised the NPF as a unified regional party, with the erstwhile NDPP ceasing to exist as a separate political entity.
The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), with 32 members, had formally merged with NPF, which had two MLAs, in October last year.
Expressing happiness over returning to what he described as his original political home, Rio said he was ''very comfortable'' to be back with the NPF, which he termed the true custodian of Naga rights and identity.
He said the NPF was formed solely to safeguard the right, identity and dignity of the Naga people, and called upon party leaders and workers to uphold this legacy with sincerity and discipline.
''This is a time for renewal,'' he said, urging all party members to educate themselves on the party's aims and objectives and to place public interest above personal gain.
Rio also reminded party workers that the NPF Constitution binds every member to remain faithful in serving the people and stressed that the party's duty is to protect Naga interests rather than individual ambitions.
Calling on municipal councillors to prioritise public welfare, he urged them to strictly adhere to party guidelines and maintain unity to avoid misunderstandings.
NPF Secretary General and MLA Achumbemü Kikün said all official formalities related to the merger have now been completed following receipt of the long-awaited official communication from the ECI.
During the programme, three NPF candidates for the upcoming ULB by-elections were formally introduced - Neichüu Kuotsü for Chümoukedima Town Ward No 11, Shikavi Kiba for Atoizu Town Ward No 9, and Aling Lotha for Wokha Town Ward No 8. They were administered the oath by Working President Pusazo Luruo.
