In a fiery critique, Punjab's Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa has condemned Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan for appointing government MLAs as the chairpersons of essential House committees, notably the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Bajwa argues this move violates the established democratic practice of opposition oversight.
Bajwa expressed strong disapproval of AAP MLA's reappointment as PAC chairman, deeming it an unusual attack on the accountability framework within the parliamentary democracy. According to Bajwa, the PAC's role is to scrutinize government functioning, traditionally led by an opposition member to ensure impartial oversight.
Questioning the impartiality of Speaker Sandhwan, Bajwa portrayed these appointments as part of a broader governmental strategy to concentrate power, undermining institutional checks and balances. Bajwa warned that such actions threaten the democratic norms and institutions that ensure transparent governance in Punjab.
