The Communist Party of India (Marxist) expressed strong disapproval of the United Democratic Front government's recent suspension of five officers from former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's security team. The CPI(M) denounced the move as a political vendetta by the Congress-led government.
These suspensions were executed in response to allegations that the officers, including Vijayan's gunman, assaulted Youth Congress members during an official event in 2023. Chief Minister V D Satheesan defended the actions, highlighting that they were based on a Special Investigation Team's findings. He emphasized that the suspensions followed thorough investigations contrary to claims of political retaliation.
CPI(M) argued that the UDF administration started exhibiting retaliatory biases even before officially coming into power, transferring government employees based on right-wing unions' directives. The party asserted that the measures against police officers were unjust, defending actions necessary to protect high-ranking officials during protests.
The party contended that while political dissent and democratic protests are valid, security decisions should not be politicized. A D Thomas, a Youth Congress leader, was notably injured in the incident during the Nava Kerala Yatra in Alappuzha, leading to further scrutiny by an SIT led by A P Shoukathali.
