Senegal's Pastef political party, led by Ousmane Sonko, has declared its non-participation in the new government. Senegal's Political Turmoil Deepens: Pastef Refuses Government Role

Senegal's political landscape is set for further turbulence as the Pastef party, led by the erstwhile Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, has opted to stay out of the country's new government. Sonko, who announced the decision on Monday, cited disagreements with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye over Pastef's involvement in the executive branch.

Despite holding a significant parliamentary majority, the Pastef leader asserted that the party would refrain from assuming any ministerial roles. This decision follows Sonko's recent dismissal by Faye and the appointment of economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo as his successor. However, in a dramatic twist, lawmakers reinstated Sonko in the assembly and supported him as speaker.

The political upheaval coincides with Senegal's efforts to manage economic difficulties tied to previously unreported debt discovered in 2024. This revelation led the International Monetary Fund to halt its $1.8 billion loan program with Senegal. With debt levels touching 132% of economic output, Senegal aims to reinitiate talks with the IMF, aiming for agreement by the end of June.
