Reform UK Tops Donation Records Amid Cryptocurrency Controversy
Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, has raised more funds than its rival parties, boosted by large donations from billionaire crypto investors like Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo. This surge in funding has sparked scrutiny, especially with impending regulations on cryptocurrency donations in UK politics.
Nigel Farage's populist party, Reform UK, has once again emerged as the powerhouse in political fundraising, outpacing its main rivals in the third quarter. This financial boost is largely attributed to substantial contributions from billionaire crypto investors.
Among these contributors are Christopher Harborne, a British-born crypto investor based in Thailand, who donated over £3 million, and Ben Delo, the Hong Kong-based co-founder of BitMex, who contributed £4 million. In total, Reform raised an impressive £9.3 million in the first quarter, compared to the Labour Party's £4 million and the Conservative Party's £4.2 million. Reform UK's success is further highlighted by its top performance in recent local elections and dominating national opinion polls.
However, these financial gains have attracted increasing scrutiny. British lawmakers are poised to introduce restrictions on cryptocurrency donations, while Farage faces investigations over a £5 million donation from Harborne. Reform UK maintains that such donations are compliant under parliamentary rules regarding personal gifts.
