South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa on today visited Mozambique and delivered the message of support to the host country during the signing ceremony of the peace and reconciliation agreement reached between the Mozambican government and the rebels at the Parque de Paz in Maputo in Mozambique.

The signing peace agreement will lead to a peaceful election in the country to be held in October.

“South Africa and Mozambique enjoy cordial bilateral relations underpinned by strong, historical and political bonds that date back to the era of the liberation efforts”, Ramaphosa said in a tweet.

The peace agreement was signed following successful political negotiations between the Mozambican Government and the Mozambique National Resistance.

Ramaphosa tweeted, “since 1994 bilateral relations between the two countries have focused not only on political matters but also increasingly on strengthening economic relations”.

The ceremony of signing a peace agreement was witnessed by four other African nations besides thousands of Maputo residents. A peace agreement was signed in 2014 also but the violence sporadically flared up. The new agreement calls for the immediate disarmament and reintegration into society of more than 5000 Renamo rebels.
