Large-shaped star near Earth could generate enormous energy in explosion similar to Big Bang event

The astronomers at University of Sydney have surprisingly found a star like none seen before in our galaxy. They believe that this new star may be about to launch one of the most powerful explosions in the universe.

Based on the findings, the scientists so far believe that one of the stars (around 8,000 light years away from Earth) is the first known candidate in our galaxy (Milky Way) to generate a gamma-ray burst. However, it is good to learn that the highly powerful and narrow jet of plasma, whenever it shoots off during its explosion, is not aimed towards our planet. Had it been so, it would penetrate our ozone layer and bring catastrophe.

The scientists are not only concerned to learn that Earth is having a front-row seat, they are flabbergasted to discover the gigantic new star system sitting in our own galaxy in a second only to the Big Bang event. The astronomers are worried of the fact they can just release in some seconds as much energy as the sun emits in its whole lifetime.

“We knew immediately that we have found something quite exceptional, the luminosity across the spectrum from the radio to the infrared was off the charts,” Dr. Joe Callingham (the lead author at the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy) said. Dr. Callingham further said that his team discovered this star as an outlier in a survey with a radio telescope operated by the University of Sydney, as mentioned in the University of Sydney’s official site.

“When we saw the stunning dust plume coiled around the these incandescent stars, we decided to name it ‘Apep’ – the monstrous serpent deity and mortal enemy of Sun god Ra from Egyptian mythology,” he further continued.
