Rescue teams successfully evacuated more than 100 villagers who were trapped in flash floods following an "excessive" release of water from Nepal, leading to the flooding of the Ghaghra river, officials revealed on Saturday.

The residents of Chahalwa village, situated near the India-Nepal border, found themselves stranded in agricultural fields on the opposite side of the Ghaghra river when the water level surged dramatically.

According to a statement from the UP Relief Commissioner's office, 115 villagers had crossed the river for farming on Friday when the water level was low. By 6 PM, the situation changed abruptly as the river's water level rose, leaving the villagers trapped. Efforts by the SSB, PAC, and NDRF teams continued late into the night, ultimately ensuring the safe evacuation of all stranded individuals. Food and medical aid were also provided, and officials have been instructed to stay on-site until normalcy is restored, officials confirmed.
