In a disturbing trend, two tigers were electrocuted in Madhya Pradesh's Shahdol district, raising the state's tiger death toll to nine in 2023. The carcasses were discovered in North Shahdol forest division, revealing a grim reality for the region's wildlife management.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Subharanjan Sen, confirmed the deaths were due to electrocution, with wires recovered from the site. This incident underscores the dangers posed by electric traps, which are used by farmers to protect crops but mistakenly kill tigers.
Wildlife activist Ajay Dubey has demanded action, alleging administrative negligence and systemic failure. His petition to the Madhya Pradesh High Court follows a historical record of 54 tiger deaths in 2025, urging an overhaul of the state's wildlife administration.
