A severe famine is rapidly worsening in Sudan's conflict-ridden Darfur region, with a global hunger monitoring group reporting that two additional towns have succumbed to the crisis. This expansion follows months after the initial report of famine in Darfur's primary city, el-Fasher, which had been overtaken by paramilitary forces.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in war due to a power struggle between the national military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The UN describes the situation as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, known for tracking famine, issued the latest report amid a deadly paramilitary attack on a military hospital in South Kordofan.
The assault killed 22, including key medical officials, further destabilizing the region. Famine has now been confirmed in the towns of Umm Baru and Kernoi, in addition to el-Fasher and Kadugli, with 20 other Sudanese areas at high risk, calling for urgent intervention.
