Tragic Loss at Stewart Detention Center: An Alarming Trend

A Cuban immigrant died while in the custody of U.S. immigration officials in Georgia, under circumstances that suggest a possible suicide, according to a notice sent to lawmakers on Friday and reviewed by Reuters. The 33-year-old man, identified as Denny Adan Gonzalez, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Stewart Detention Center on April 28 and was declared dead within an hour, as reported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

The incident forms part of a troubling pattern as the detention of immigrants has been on the rise since President Donald Trump, a Republican, took office. Under his tenure, the capacity at immigration facilities expanded from 40,000 detainees at the start of his presidency in 2025, to 60,000 today, with plans for further expansion within the year.

Concerns mount as immigrant deaths within ICE custody have hit a two-decade high, with 18 fatalities reported in just the first four months of this year, signaling a grim trajectory that parallels the administration's intensifying deportation policies.
