Two lion cubs have died in Gujarat's Gir forest, raising concerns about a potential Babesia virus infection. The deaths were confirmed by State Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia, who stated that other recent lion deaths were due to natural causes and infighting.
Modhwadia emphasized there is no epidemic threat, affirming that the forest officials and veterinary teams are diligently working to curb the virus's spread. Measures include identifying infected lions, collecting samples, and removing ticks.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Jaipal Singh, noted that the lion cub fatalities were isolated incidents, highlighting improved veterinary care and surveillance efforts to maintain a low mortality rate among the lions.
