Heatwaves in India Highlight Urgency for Climate Adaptation

As vast areas of India grapple with extreme heat, UN climate chief Simon Stiell attributes the rising temperatures mainly to climate change fueled by coal, oil, and gas consumption. He emphasized the hardship faced by those without access to cooling and those who labor outdoors for extended hours.

Stiell, the UNFCCC Executive Secretary, stressed global adaptation measures, as the India Meteorological Department warned of continuing heatwaves over central and northwest regions. Record-high electricity demands, peaking at 270.8 GW on May 21, have further strained resources.

Renewable energy, particularly solar, has played a crucial role in meeting daytime power needs. Stiell noted India's commitment to solar power development as a critical factor in coping with energy demands.

The crisis underscores the need for domestic clean energy initiatives and efficiency enhancements to provide cooling solutions and stabilize electricity for households, businesses, and services.

Stiell also pointed out that surging fossil fuel prices, exacerbated by Middle Eastern conflicts, pose a compounded challenge to India’s energy landscape.
