The International Olympic Committee has selected the French Alps as the host for the 2030 Winter Games. French President Emmanuel Macron assured the IOC of governmental support, though conditions require signoff from the next French Prime Minister. Climate change challenges were acknowledged, with a commitment to creating a sustainable model for the future.
The French Alps has been chosen as the host for the 2030 Winter Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday, pending signoff from France's next Prime Minister.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who presented the bid, assured the IOC that the new government will underwrite all necessary organizational guarantees. The bid received overwhelming approval, with 84 votes in favor and only four against. Macron expressed gratitude, committing to fulfilling all promises.
The IOC has set an Oct. 1 deadline for the next French Prime Minister to guarantee key commitments, with ratification required by March 1. Recent snap parliamentary elections delayed these guarantees, but the French bid, focused on the Alps and Nice, faced no competition.
Amid challenges of climate change, Macron and officials pledged to innovate a sustainable model for future Winter Games. Renaud Muselier, regional president, echoed this sentiment, vowing the greenest Games ever. France has previously hosted the Winter Games in 1924, 1968, and 1992.
