Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha has expressed her disappointment following the removal of medal-bearing sports such as wrestling, hockey, and badminton from the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. While the decision is disheartening, Usha acknowledges the necessity of managing costs to keep hosting the games viable.
The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for July 23 to August 2, sees Glasgow returning as host 12 years after its last stint. The city stepped in after Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to escalating expenses. Glasgow's organizers are committed to minimizing financial and operational risks through a streamlined event plan.
Despite the potential loss of numerous medals for India, Usha supports the cost-reduction strategy, citing its benefits such as a reduced environmental footprint and the promise of a sustainable, progressive model that could enable more countries to host the games in the future.
